E-Prescribing Exemption for Some California Dentists:

The State of California has new legislation, becoming active in 2023, that will exempt certain dentists from mandated e-prescribing of prescription medications. California dentists may request an exemption from the current requirement to electronically transmit prescriptions to pharmacies.

Criteria to qualify for E-Prescribing Exemption:

To qualify for exemption from the mandated electronic prescribing, a dentist must register with the California State Board of Pharmacy and confirm that they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Issue 100 or fewer prescription per calendar year
  • Their practice is in an area declared an "emergency disaster" a local, state, or federal government
  • Cannot issue an electronic prescription due to circumstances beyond their control

Registration is supposed to be inexpensive and renewed annually with the California Board of Pharmacy.
